The United STATS of America Design Brief: Create a graphic element involving type (specifically numbers) to reflect the statistical nature of this particular article (taken from the NY Times Sunday Edition). Concept & Process Newspapers, in general, are littered with stats about almost everything imaginable across the nation. In order to depict this abundance of numerical information, I used actionscript to generate several hundred random numbers and masked the resulting mass with the outline of the nation. Within this mass, I highlighted the appropriate numbers to match the specific stats referenced in each article. The idea of a map also allowed me to lay the image across all 5 article panels, integrating them into a conceptually cohesive unit. The lines between each article were extended to form a grid, reinforcing the idea of latitude and longitudinal lines as seen on maps. |
