This chart maps out 42nd street starting from 11th avenue to 1st avenue. The distances between each stop on the chart are drawn to scale using Google Earth's distance tool. The walking time was given by the MTA Manhattan Bus Map, where it assumed that it took 10 minutes to walk 1/2 mile. 

Using my iPhone, I was able to keep track of how long it took to get from one bus stop to the next. In total, two round-trips on the M42 were made and the times that were used to generate the chart does not include the time it took for people to get onto the bus.

Points of Interest
There are a couple of notable points on the chart. Between 9th and 10 avenue, there's a huge jump in travel time, especially when heading from west to east. This is due to heavy traffic coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel at Dyer Avenue, which is a short thoroughfare that serves as an exit ramp for the bridge and tunnel folk.

Another area to avoid on the bus is the Theater district, which runs between 7th and 8th ave. On Friday nights, this area is heavily populated with tourists and people getting out of work. It's also important to note that there is an additional crosswalk/traffic light to accommodate the heavy foot traffic in this area.
