SEED, 10 Minute Redesign
Wednesday, 10 June 2009

Some may argue that a redesign requires a ton of research, but our 10 minute redesign for SEED magazine's website was based on best practices and experience taken from the B2B industry. With that in mind, let's begin!

Current Design - The pink denotes the fold [approx 620px from the top]
Current Design - The pink denotes the fold [approx 620px from the top]

After taking a look at Seedmagazine.com, we felt that the leaderboard with the dark background at the top of the page prevented a sense of 'openness' to the site. Although some may think otherwise [minus the ad sales team at SEED], we also felt that there was too much of a separation between the ad and the content.

To address these problems, we moved the leaderboard further down the page. This helped to open up the top area of the site along with providing better leverage for the ad (based on stats, this lower position performs better on click thru rates). We also swapped the house ad (ad below the 300x250 ad) with the 300x250. This avoided any conflict between advertisers in case ads were to stack vertically (not including the house ad).

And last but not least, the side-by-side comparison.

Before I quickly wrap this up, I'd like to make a note that the site is currently wider than 1024px. As of today, June 2009, 1024px is the standard resolution for most users. A way of resolving this would be to reduce the width of the main content well.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this quick 10 minute redesign. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

I'd like to thank Tiffany Guidice for working with me on this!
