10/19/2008 (from my journal)

It's about 3PM
Grandma has entered her late afternoon nap humming a song with every breath. I lay next to her in her twin size bed, reminiscing about the days when she took care of me during my early years (~6 years old) growing up in Queens. She would use to rock me to sleep while patting my back humming a similar tune. During that time, my mom was busy caring for my younger brother at our old apartment on Allen Street, located on the outskirts of Chinatown.

Today, it's been confirmed that she's taking a "moderate" dosage of chemo to fight liver cancer now in it's advanced stages. She seemed quite energetic with company around earlier, but as the room cleared out, she started to get tired. I suspected it was the chemo.

Three surgeries and chemo all within the span of a year and at the age of 89, my grandma has gone through some tough times especially for a person at her age. It inspires me and the rest of the family to know that there IS someone out there that lives life as strongly as she does.

After 89 years, grandma is pulling up her wrinkled, silky arms and facing another day in this constant struggle we call life.
