The <hr /> Contest by Smashing Magazine Here was my entry along with the concept behind it. ![]() Shoes on a Wire - Like the HR tag, the shoes dangling from a wire overhead offers a visual and mental break from the hustle and bustle of the city Grade: F Logo Design for the Penton Internal Journal Objective: Design a logo for a brand spanking new newsletter called the Penton Internal Journal. Yes, the title is quite sleep-inducing, but it made it all the more challenging. Reward: $100 gas card. Yes, I don't own a vehicle in the city, but whatever, what was there to lose? After failing my first exam, I decided to change my angle on this particular project. Instead of using the goal ($100 gas card) as a driving factor to creating the piece, I swapped it with my passion for design. ![]() Penton's Internal Journal Concept: The "I" in "internal" reminded me of the signage seen on information booths at major malls, airports, etc. These booths are frequented by people looking for up-to-date information on specifics. In Penton's case, the newsletter would be the equivalent of these information booths. The "I" should be the first thing to pop, representing the information aspect of the logo. With further examination, the letters P, I, and J visually forms representing "Penton Internal Journal". A few weeks later, I found out that I won the contest. It was quite a relief to see that people still believe in concept more so than the flashy design that some have come to adore these days. Now I have to figure out what to do with a $100 gas card...
