Fishy Business at Tsukiji
Thursday, 01 May 2008

After only 30 minutes of sleep from the night before, we all wake up at around 5AM to prepare for the fish market extravaganza. Ships start docking into the port at 3AM and the fish auctions start at around 5:20AM. Obviously, we were already running late.

While on our way to the train, we spot a homeless person sleeping in a corner. One important thing to note: the homeless people in Japan are cleaner than some of the none-homeless people in NYC and perhaps even more well-mannered.

For people planning to visit the Tsujiki Fish Market, it's about a 30 minute train ride from Asakusa located at the Tsukijishijō Station on the Toei Ōedo Line and Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line.

We obviously missed the main event, the fish auction, but hey, thank goodness for youtube!

Without a fish auction to witness, we venture into the confines of the dark warehouse in search of colossal squid with eyes the size of soccer balls...

We finally make our way to the fish auction area. This section is frequented by so many darn tourists that they even designated an area for us tourists to stand / watch / take pictures / etc.

Okay, so overall, this fish market was an average experience. I mean, take a walk down Mott Street in Chinatown and you'll get a small glimpse as to what you'll see at this fish market. The only issue I had was that our group and all the other tourists were getting in the way of the fish market workers. It's early in the morning... would you like people getting in the way of your job?

After an hour or so meandering abouts the Tsukiji Fish Market, a few of us lost our appetite for seafood and decided to hit up the local Denny's. OMG, killer omelette and sausage. Note: Most of the items on the menu are Japanese-influenced because the American version doesn't quite cut it.

Where's sushi breakfast? Dude~~~~ The sushi I ate at a random restaurant in Tsukiji was the best sushi I ever had in my entire life!! Too bad you didn't have any appetite :( Next time we'll go together!
Gene
Not at 6am! I can't imagine having sushi with a steamy cup of coffee. Oh, and yes, I'm going to hold you to your word!
Mitch
Salmon? No, Tuna All that fish was tuna, not salmon. Tuna is where the big $ are. Of course, because they are top predators, it's also where the mercury is. Doh!
Gene
Tuna it is! Thanks Mitch! I'm glad I didn't scarf down that much salmon during my stay in Tokyo then. Phew.
